the solution was to delete everything in the .spamassassin directory - the database can get corrupt/broken between versions of SA being released. If you delete it, it will be rebuilt for you.

Update : I tried removing the other files in that directory except for the user_prefs file and still get that error message only during the learn portion of that script. ?? Somehow I already had 2 bayes files there.
