I believe WordPress has one of the easiest and simple theme systems.
First, go here and find a theme that you most closely want for your site and download it.

The same page will have directions on where to put the folder on your site and installation steps in the admin panel. Use a text editor on your computer to edit your templates and you don't have to worry about writeable folders.
