You will actually get a "500 Internal server error" or a "Forbidden Error" if you have a 777 directory when you first access your forum, well before you have a chance to install a new mod. Remember also that the file and folder permissions should be done only after all your files and folders have been verified as belonging to the user and not "99 / nobody".

WordPress and Gallery2 installs are flawless (as are most applications). Just ignore the directive to make the folder 777, it is actually saying "Make the folder writeable", which is set by default to the user using PHPsuExec.
