I use FileZilla for a FTP client. With it I can see at a glance a folder's and file's permissions as well as ownership. While ownership can only be changed, if needed, by a "root" login, permissions can be changed via FTP. You can highlight all your folders, choose file attributes, pick your permissions and click OK. They all get changed. And it is only a one time thing. If you have more than 2 or 3 folders with a 777 permission, you have let your site get quite vulnerable. 1 is 1 too many.
