Question A Linux newbie or rookie?

How familiar should a person be to jump into the VPS plans with working in and with Linux?

I have dabbled some with Redhat 8 and Mandrake 9 and Knoppix 3 but last used over a year ago.

Looking at upgrading soon maybe for more control, security and stability with my sites. Still only have a very small foot print as sites and bandwidth goes but not sure going to a OC10 will give me the control, security and stability I want. But I don't want to walk from the wade pool into the lake to fast. and know I don't need the ocean of a dedicated lol

Being managed servers do I need to know very much or should the basics get me by just fine while I learn. I am one of those who learn better and faster hands on versus by reading a book. I often read the book after to fill in the blanks I guess you can say.

I'm just kind of at a impasse right now with this. Like today SH76 is having some lag. For an hour the ms to the server has been around 260 to 290 causing no major issues just making my sites rather slow. But on a busy reseller like OC10 I can see that as very possible too. But not as likely on a VPS if I understand the workings of it all right.

Any and all input welcome. Especially about linux and the use of with VPS.
