I am a lot like you in that I have some experience many years ago with Linux but not much recent. Really, you don't need that much to get started. The most used commands for me are for changing file ownership and permissions via ssh.
I did employ public key encryption for my ssh and followed the instructions I found in the dedicated forum for doing that - it was a good refresher in creating and editing files via ssh. The VPS control panel lets you do a lot, including a nice file manager that lets you get to all domains hosted on the box.
I love mine and being able to fix simple stuff like file ownership without filing a ticket is worth a lot to me - as is not being at the security whim of the least secure person on a shared server. The support desk is always there for anything you really need help for.
