www.whatever.com will start in the public_html directory that you see when using FTP.
If you still see the old site, your nameservers for the domain either have not been changed or not enough time has elapsed for your ISP to get the change.
You can view the new site by using
http://the.new.IP.number/~yourusername/ until the nameservers have caught up.
If you give us the site URL when asking a question like this, it allows us to let you know if we see it OK.
