ftp using browser

I have a reseller account.
I want to make some files on one of my domains available to friends to download, so I tried setting up an ftp account under cPanel with public_ftp as the available folder on the server.
I want people to be able to download the files via their browser, so to test it I fired up IE7 and entered into the URL bar
ftp://ftp.mydomain.com/
I expected a login box to appear so I could enter user/password into, but instead I got "IE cannot display the webpage".
In IE7 if I try
ftp://username:passwordmydomain.com/
it does come up with the login box but only the main username/password will work and obviously I don't want to give out my cPanel user-id and password.

If I try it in Firefox2 it sits saying "Loading" forever.

Anybody able to suggest where I've gone wrong?
Thanks in advance
