I'm not sure if what I'm thinking is what you are asking, but wouldn't you add a new user name in your c panel. Test it to make sure it works. When you confirm it works, delete your old user name?

Like Jeanie, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Her instructions are for changing FTP user names. However, if you are on a shared server and want to change your site's cPanel user name, you cannot do this yourself. Support might be able to do this for you but you would probably need a good reason... If you are a reseller, then you can set up a new user name in WHM and transfer over all the files from the old account (but that wouldn't transfer mail settings, etc.).
