For the record, they've been more stable (in my experience), as well.

'Tis about the way I feel about them. Their support system is slow (for response time), but they have the technical specs I need and the toys I want. I actually like their panel much more than CPanel. I find it gives more freedom in how you run your account.
But unless you're actually looking for a high space and bandwidth plan... I wouldn't use it as a judging point. My advice... Don't do a 2-year (anywhere). Monthly sucks because of setup fee, but is the best way to go. 1-year is probably the smartest way for bypassing setup and not having too much loss if you have to pull out. On deciding whether they're a good choice... you have to look at what needs you have and whether they meet them. I see Surpass as better in some categories and Dreamhost in others. Just have to look at which ones meets the most of your criticals. |

Try using coupon code '9999'. Should get you a year for around $10 or so. Also to clarify, you get 2 TB of bandwidth, not 2000 TB.
Overall they seem to be pretty good. Haven't really heard many bad things about them. You can't beat the price for what you get if you need a lot of space and bandwidth. I have quite a few friends who use their service to host huge files. They have used probably a good 300 to 400 gigs of bandwidth without a problem. I'm not really a fan of their control panel though. I guess I'm just too used to cPanel.

I feel that comparing their control panel to cPanel is like comparing chalk and cheese; they are totally different and both have their strong points. cPanel is easier to navigate, but dreamhost gives you way more control over your account.

Rolling ruby/rails has gone great for us so far. We do it in a isolated enviorment so we can support it fully. Give all the features they want/need as tech heads. We run Cpanel as you all know, This means every feature we roll must work 110% with cpanel, Along with updates rolled out at same time as cpanel writes the confs. We are fully able to develop our own inhouse control panel, We don't because we know Cpanel is a recongized brand name that helps with the generation of sales. We try to offer the both of best worlds. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve from a tech stand point, paul surpasshosting.com. Feel free to email, I always respond and would love input from this great community!<3 Surpass |

I was going to wait for Kickers to comment on the PHP support, but I might as well kick it in. It's not "better" in the sense that PHP itself is better, it's better in the practice that you pick PHP5 or PHP4 on a domain/subdomain basis. Kickers, please correct me if I'm wrong in believing this is what you're meaning. I haven't used PHP5 with Surpass so I'm lacking experience with it.
My site running on maindomain.tld can be running PHP5, but the forum running on forum.maindomain.tld can be running PHP4. All of this without having to play with .htaccess. And to the best of my ability to read, they don't inject it into your .htaccess. It's subjective of course. We all have our preferred methods. Paul -- while I understand CPanel's recognizability promotes sales to a certain market, it's also a limitation to another. I should note that I'm not arguing against Surpass. I'm just stating the voice of someone that is more affected by the offerings of a webhost than most others. |
