Haugland, those are awesome features that Dreamhost offers that Surpass does not, but not what caused me to switch. Surpass had major compatibility and reliability issues with PHP5.

For example, when PHP5 was rolled to my server (very late; you claimed all servers would have it by the end of May), only after I specifically filed a ticket, it lacked many of the features/extensions/libraries which PHP4 offered. One major one was IMAP. Another was MySQL (PHP5 had MySQLi support, so I just updated my class files; no big deal). When I filed another ticket about a lack of IMAP support, they enabled that...and promptly broke MySQLi, but enabled MySQL. I asked why it kept flip-flopping and the answer was something along the lines of that they "couldn't get PHP5 to compile with IMAP and PHP5 for an unknown reason."

So, in short, not only were you way way way behind the curve on rolling out PHP5 support, but it appeared your support team knew nothing more about PHP5 that a 30-second Google search for "installing php5" would tell them.

That is why I moved my active sites away Surpass.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the whole phpSuExec compatibility and local php.ini/.htaccess kept flipping back and forth everytime the server was reconfigured.

EDIT #2: Haugland, the way Dreamhost accomplishes different PHP4/5 support is that EACH SITE has a local configuration/build of PHP. http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/PHP.ini

I also use and like DreamHost's service a lot, although their support response times have really sucked lately. That and the recent network issues kinda put a dent in my love for DreamHost. My yearly renewal is coming up in February and as it is, I will most likely keep my DH account.

Surpass is great - don't get me wrong - but DreamHost ain't bad, either.

Well, I would have to say, there forum is not nearly as helpful or for that matter aesthetically pleasing.

I really like the fact that they provide shell access with the account.

I don't like their implementation of spam assassin, they are out of date version 3.0.6, but you do have the option of installing your own version your server...

200 gig, for backups, that is awesome, I may not have a website that big, but putting all of my photos, and music files up there just for backup purposes makes sense, uploading will be a b***h though.

It does seem like overkill, but for 10/Year of hosting with a coupon... it might be worth a try!

You can get shell access with an account here too

Use the link here, for a one time 20 dollar fee.

http://www.surpasshosting.com/addon.php

I have it setup on my account for those times that I need to make a quick script change.

Once servers are stable here at surpass with phpSUEXEC, you can specify which PHP to use, per folder, with a local PHP.INI... right?

At least that's what I understand, I may be wrong....

Why should Surpass be charging for it? It costs them nothing and as long as you hold users accountable for what they do, there shouldn't be any problems.

Shell access (and the ability to add/remove accounts) was a definite plus for me.

Some hosts do not even provide shell access because of the risks associated with it. I think the $20 fee is appropriate because for those that really need it, $20 is not a whole lot.

I agree, I would never just give anyone shell access that we host, just because they may either abuse it, or go in and think they know what they're doing, and end up screwing up some of their files.

Screwing up their own files? Doubtful... it's something that few use and few know how to use. Most that do use it have a general idea of what they're doing. It's their problem if they screw up their own files.

And with Dreamhost by default all accounts are setup with just FTP access.. not SSH. You have to specify giving SSH access.
