I screwed up some of my files on DreamHost when playing with SSH...
Then I sent in a support ticket to ask about it, and they said everything looked fine, but it wasn't.
So I wound up Googling, going to the library, and after 3 months of research, I found a solution, and I felt like an idiot...
SSH shouldn't be given out to everyone, then support tickets will be flying in like crazy with questions and stuff...
But I think it should be cheaper...
I never use it though, I screwed up alot of stuff last time I tried, so I don't think I'll be toying with it again any time soon.

I like the PHP 4 and PHP 5 thing on dreamhost though.

Just some side questions,
When I renew at DreamHost, do I have to go by years (if I started off paying for a year), or can I continue paying by months after the year?

LaughLaughLaugh...

Really don't know what to say about that, pretty disrespectful. But whatever you think.

To be honest... It's no different from leaving a bottle of cough syrup in the medicine cabinet. Most people will take doses when they need it and follow the recommended dosages (use it when they need it, not to play and have a clue about what they're doing -- through instruction or otherwise). But there's gonna be that kid that drinks the whole damn thing and gets brutally sick (the guy that plays around and screws something up). We don't pay more for child-proof caps... why pay more for SSH?

Switching to monthly will mean you have to pay the setup fee. I was looking into that as there's talks with some co-workers about giving Amazon's grid a chance... but realized the loss is like $2/month.

I don't like their implementation of spam assassin, they are out of date version 3.0.6, but you do have the option of installing your own version your server...

200 gig, for backups, that is awesome, I may not have a website that big, but putting all of my photos, and music files up there just for backup purposes makes sense, uploading will be a b***h though.

It does seem like overkill, but for 10/Year of hosting with a coupon... it might be worth a try!
If you want shell access, I'd be glad to issue it for your account with us now if you plan on staying with Surpass. We certainly do not want to see you leave if that is one of the things you really want.

As for the space for backups, we give a lot of space on our plans as it is and possibly could work out something where we label chunks as "backup" but tell me, are you really going to be using 200 GB or anywhere close to that?

Off topic since we are talking about backups, I store most things I want to keep forever on CDs. I actually use Flickr to store photos and graphics, and for music it goes into the MP3 player or stays on my computer so I can listen to it. I used to upload everrrything into webservers but I did get tired of constant uploading/downloading.

They're starting to recommend not using CD's for long-term back-up. Most writable CDs have a lifespan of 10 year. Haven't heard about DVD's yet (which I use exclusively now) though. Flickr <3 ... I need to go picture taking soon.

What'd be really cool for back-up would be a VPN-like solution on a grid (distributed for redundent backup). Have everything on the grid and just use network storage. It'd work for things like music, pictures, documents, etc... but probably not so great for video.

Most things that I've kept on CDs in the past have been photos, and a few weeks ago I actually dug up some CDs from 1998 (during the last years of high school) and uploaded them to Flickr. I do feel weary about things on CDs but usually I end up moving things around again before that 10 years is out. :x

There are backup-only hosts sprouting up every few weeks really, things are moving fast.

Thanks Kayla, I'll keep that in mind...

One question how to ssh accounts work here, is it per domain, or is it good for the entire account, what if you have multiple accounts?

as for the 200 GB, though I may never use it all, I could see uploading 37 GB of Photos, as a method of BU, 25 GB of Music, again as a form of BU, With that I add the website, and I'm only looking at 62 GB, but that is now an off-site backup of important files, the photos more then the music, and still have much more room to play with, Heck for that matter, i could create another ftp account with limited access, and allow a family member to store there stuff up there as well, you could see how the space could be used up, but with a purpose...

Just thoughts.

SSH access is per domain since we have to grant it seperately for each domain that needs it.

Are you looking for more of a "SSH Anytime" type of deal, so that you can grant it yourself to newly created accounts?

Perhaps it was, but that was the result of my experience, and I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

YMMV.
