Your Opinion: Guestbooks

Since we're all either web publishers or users of the web, I was thinking... what are peoples thoughts on guestbooks. They were neat in 1998. Are they still neat today? Do you wish a hit on all that have one?

I'd make a poll, but I want discussion.

Start.

Now.

Why are you still reading this? Discuss!

Seriously... you're just making me mad now.

Discuss, god damnit!

I think it depends on the application.

Over the last year we have been introduced to CaringBridge.com, where people who are ill can have a free website, with a journal, photogallery, and yes, a guest book.

So, for those that are ill, it is a wonderful way to get greetings and well wishes from family and friends that are not confined to emails.

Other than that, I dont think I have seen much in the way of a good use for guestbooks, post 1998.. :-P

Most sites I visit use tag boards now instead of a guestbook. Almost every pixel site that I browse has some form of tag board.

I already know you visited my site. I don't need you to sign your name telling me you were there.

My site uses one of those Guestbooks... but, it's really just a comment spam bot magnet more than anything.. usually get 50 to 100 comment spam attempts on it a day. Here's the total so far since I reset the counter:

12,127 separate attempts from 3,405 distinct IP addresses since [04:14:32 09/11/2007 EDT].

Nowadays, you can just turn any post of a blog into a Guesbook if you wanted to.. same effect really.

A guestbook is like.. one blog post... with a really long list of regular comments. But the post is always there in one spot. Yees...
