I know what virtual desktops are, I have very little experience with them, and really, I'm not downloading any direct .exe file. I don't care if it came directly from God.

It seems a lot like you don't... Maybe your reply wasn't targeting Virtual Desktops, but you made it seem like it wanted you to try fitting everything onto one screen. In reality, it gives you multiple desktops you can cycle through so that you don't have to do that. Just think... WoW in fullscreen on one monitor, Firefox open on the other monitor, then you hit your other space and bam! there's your instant messaging stuff and your P2P downloading software.
Next time I'll make a random webpage that links to the EXE instead of just linking to the EXE directly. Perhaps that'll satisfy you're security barriers which doesn't care what the URL is, it just wants to click a link on a webpage. |

You're telling me there's not a single page on the Microsoft website that links to that .exe, you *have* to know the name of exe directly in order to download it? I hardly thing that it's an insane security demand to wish to see an explanation of the program before you download it. I would think that people blindly downloading exe files in this day and age would be frowned upon.
As far as virtual desktops, like I said, I don't have much experience with them. The little experience I had was pretty negative. It was very ineffectual and basically a huge pain in the ass. Now I'm sure that's just because it had a really poor setup going. From what I've seen, I can't visualize it being a big help to me or something worthwhile to set up. Maybe it's the greatest thing in the world for you, I just don't have a problem with the way I run things at the moment, the comments was made purely out of observation because everyone else I know that runs high resolutions resize their windows as if they were running on multiple smaller screens. I like to still run them fullscreen and I alt-tab between them. It works for me. What is the difference though, of having a separate virtual desktop for my instant messaging (bear in mind, I only chat with one person) and switching between it and the desktop that has my web browser open, versus alt-tabbing to that window? Other than having to blindly check if I have new messages (because I can't see it all the time on my desktop) and saving a little clutter on my taskbar. You still have to do something that is the equivalent of alt-tab to change desktops, whether a new hot key or mouse click or whatever. I realize a lot of what I'm saying is probably coming off as snide and bitchy, and other than the bit of you hassling me for having security standards, I'm actually just trying to understand how this could be a benefit for me, someone just *slightly* higher than a casual computer user. I just don't see it. What you say makes sense H, and perhaps if I was more complex user or even more popular to have people chatting with, it might be more use. As it is on a single monitor right now, I couldn't have a virtual desktop to switch off of WoW to check an instant message, otherwise I'd end up running myself off a cliff. Perhaps if I get back into web design this summer, it will become more viable. In fact, I'm almost certain in that case, it would be. But right now, to have WoW going, a web browser and one instant messaging window open... seems a little like over kill. And Mike, thanks, but I was looking to go bigger, not smaller. lol

Nah, I just had the file bookmarked from 2 years ago when I still used Windows. I was too lazy to find the actual page, but thought it wouldn't be a security concern simply because it's very obviously from the Microsoft website. Nothing wrong with having security standards, just have to know when to trust what you see. I'm not about to link to an executable binary that kills machines on this forum -- it'd berather stupid.
And fair enough, it's definitely a workflow preference for some people. Suits me well due to the sheer number of applications and windows I have open at a given time, but if you're at 3, maybe it's not all that important. This is what mine looks like at work right now using the Spaces Expose thing, some stuff is minimized or for some reason closed right now too: ![]() |

One of the people I trusted a lot once sent me a virus link because he thought it would be "fun". Needless to say, I ceased to be very trusting after that. And that includes not even the Microsoft site.
![]() See, that setup seems to work for you. I can imagine maybe using one of have my email open and maybe a couple other uses... See, now you have me thinking about it. Right now, not so much, but I can see future uses for it.
