I've been debating whether or not to use WP. A good friend of mine (as well as my former host and current SurpassHosting hostee) uses Wordpress, and manages to pull it off pretty flawlessly.
My conundrum is that I'm really not all that interesting of the person, and I feel that the only way I can justify paying for hosting is if I spend an exorbitant amount of time handwriting the CMS that powers my site... I also realize that by using a pre-made posting system, I could save time that I could spend making my site more interesting, as opposed to getting to the blog phase and rewriting everything because I think of more efficient ways to write things... |

Wordpress is pretty powerful, and it handles all of the dirty work of blogging. I would recommend it, at least for a test run. Install it on a subdomain and play around with it for a while and if you like it, you can export your posts (if you want) and import them back to your new install. I'd even be willing to help you with the theme if you really wanted/needed the help, but I'm pretty sure your skills are superior to mine as far as coding goes. I have an idea though, as far as interesting blogs go.. I think it would be cool if Surpass came up with a list of blog topics, and then users write their blogs and post links to them in the forums. It wouldn't really be a contest, but more like a stimulus to get bloggers writing about a common topic to share ideas and viewpoints. Livejournal does something similar (not sure if that's a public page or if you need to be logged in to view it..) but it's called Writer's Block, and they just have a topic for listed and a brief description and you click the button to "answer it" which just puts a special tag on it and some LJ-end coding to specify it to their display system. But we could just link to each other via the forums. I think this could be lots of fun, and no one would be obligated to participate, but it would really be neat to spread your thoughts and views while taking in those of others.

That is a really good idea, Rob.
Just have Kayla make a sticky thread or something, and have everyone post in their blogs about whatever topic we decide (a democratic, voting deal would be sort of neat. Everyone votes and then we decide what topic to write about based off of that), then have them either post a link to their entr(y)(ies) or the entr(y)(ies) it (them) sel(f)(ves) It was hard covering all of my singulars and plurals there... |

Any time several people write about the same topic, they're bound to have conflicting views and opinions, which can be a great motivator for you to write more, and sometimes even change your views, and open your eyes to new points of view. I imagine it to be a post started by Kayla which contains the topic. Then each user who responds with an entry on their blog replies to the topic post by Kayla with a link, and you can see who else has replied. Additionally, if I especially like your reply cass, I can link to you directly from my entry, thus sharing traffic and opening up others to your blog; which would be in addition to me linking back to the topic thread from my blog so people can read others' posts as well as mine regarding the same topic. Kayla! Doitnowplzkthx.

I'm not sure how much I'm liking Wordpress.
It's giving me a case of Moveabletype syndrome, when I first started using it back in the day. I might actually use MT as opposed to WP, since I know the hierarchy of MT much better than WP. MT isn't too bad, but it's designed more for business applications, if you ask my opinion. |

In case you haven't figured this out yet with WP.. in order for it to write to the .htaccess file, you need to edit the /wp-includes/vars.php to force $is_apache to true because the server software reports back as WebServerX. Following is the server detection part of the script:
PHP Code:
I could on about how I've gotten myself addicted to EverQuest II LOL or how I'm getting over my messed-up right foot.. |
