Perfect Popcorn
I have a confession. A While back people voted for me to get the "smiles" award in the fifth annual forum awards. I thank everybody kindly for such an honor. I received a gift certificate to amazon, and combined it with some of my own cash and bought a popcorn maker. I have decided that since everybody here has been so kind and thoughtful, I would try to give back to the community as best I could with the gift the community got me. So I will share my trials, and tribulations. My popcorn trials and tribulations, that is.
After much experimenting (and plenty of different and odd ingredients) I have come to the PERFECT recipe for popcorn. Please scale the measurements for your own particular maker (stovetop or other). For the small pot in my popcorn maker, I make very small batches (perfect for a sitdown and watching a movie with my girlfriend). To make the perfect movie theater quality popcorn: 1 Tablespoon of pure coconut oil I've tried just about 6 different popcorn oil blends, and the only one that makes REAL movie theater popcorn is coconut oil. (Don't get flavored. Popcorn coconut oil often has yellow coloring to help make it look good, but avoid butter flavored ones. I use this one here, which is cheap and in bulk!) 1/3 cup unpopped popcorn seed You can get this at your grocery store. 1/4 teaspoon Flavacol Seasoning This is the secret ingredient. Movie theaters use Flavacol. Once you taste your popcorn with this, you'll realize just what you've been missing. Add more (I could add up to 3/8 teaspoon, maybe 1/2 teaspoon if you REALLY like salt. I prefer it mild with butter topping myself) Flavacol is surprisingly cheap ($3 a quart here) and one quart will last.. well.. forever, really.. If you like butter topping, a final - optional- topping is this: Light buttery topping, shake popcorn I've tried a few different options, this one is the most movie-theater-esque topping. Tastes great drizzled on top or layered in popcorn.

Ooops, so I think I'll add, how to make it.
Warm your pot for a minute or two medium heat (or use the heat instructions on your popper) The lower the heat, the slower the pop, the bigger the kernel. You want big and fluffy. I recommend using a popper with a crank to stir the popcorn, or an automatic popper. Using a pot and shaking will result in a few burned kernels. After your pot is warm, add all three ingredients at once. When popping slows, remove from heat. Dump into bowl ASAP to avoid burning kernels. AMEN. For those curious, this is the popper I bought. The door broke, and I'm waiting for them to send me a new one. Is it very nice? Not great great quality- small batches of popcorn, and cheap plastic. No warmer either, just a light bulb. But for my purposes, it's perfect and makes great popcorn. So if you wanna go cheap I recommend it, despite the problems... ![]()

Awesome. I bought a Webber Kettle with mine. I always wanted a popcorn maker. And one of those hotdog maker things that gas stations always have. You know, the ones who have hotdogs in them that are older than the Constitution?
I'm lazy though, so if I did have it, I'd probably still throw a bag of microvable in and just go with that.

We have a deep fryer too, but we never use it. My wife wanted it for a long time because she used to have one, so we got one from Walmart. It's been used maybe a dozen times in the past 8 months.
