Question: Have any of you with AVG noticed any performance issues? I ask because AVG 8 caused weird speed issues on lots of machines (mine included) and I'm not sure if anyone ever figured out what was causing it.

The weird speed issues with 8 are still less than any speed issues caused by norton. It's a lesser of two evils thing..

It's also far less than the speed issues with Vista. I'm using AVG free right now, but am seriously thinking about upgrading it to Linux. It works better than any of them, with a performance increase, not penalty.

No problem with speed on my computer, and it's only a 1gb machine.

I don't doubt that. I listened to a webinar a couple weeks ago and a Symentec spokeswoman was on there talking about their products. She admitted that they basically sucked for a long time and they are trying to fix that.
