tis very true. your observation details the single biggest obstacle open source at the enterprise level faces. its human nature to want to hold someone accountable and interact with someone who has intimate knowledge about the product.

forums are definitely a try em out and see which you like best kinda thing.

I chose IPB because from what I've read IPB has better security. PHBB(2) is probably the easiest to implement and install. I tried PHBB(2) for a little while.

While it was a bit challenging to get used to, IPB seems to be more flexible.

Although I am one of those persons that seems to like complicated things. I like buttons and switches on my gadgets. The more buttons and switches (in my opinion) allow for more fine adjustment and a more custom operation.

IPB all the way BABY!! (Unless I am installing one for someone that needs "easy")

yeah, I would have to agree that phpBB is better due to the ease of administration, without cramming a ton of stuff in your face.

of course the preceeding was just my $0.02. :stereo:

I started with PHPBB and didn't like it once I started using Invision. Invision is great software with a great admin area. It seems to give you much more control than PHPBB. Also, skinning IB was much easier for me than skinning PHPBB, which I still don't understand.

i aggree that IPB gives you way more administration but i think its way too much

its the most fun creating your own skins for phpbb

I'm not sure how you could ever have too much control. That was one of the main reasons I decided to leave PHPBB when I did. It lacked a lot of control over the board and users. Plus, IB resizes avatars. I hate having to resize my avatars on my machine, resave it, and then upload it. Not many sites resize for you.

However, if you are looking for software with a larger user community, PHPBB is more than likely the one to choose. Invision's is nothing to scoff at, but when compared to PHPBB's, it seems that it comes in second in the way of a community backing it up. It's easier to find mods and skins, in particularlly the free ones. PHPBB has http://phpbbhacks.com ....Invision has http://ibplanet.com

PHPBB still uses those TPL files (might not be the right name) don't they? I always had problems with those. Invision's is just HTML and CSS. Xoops is the same way. That might be why I stuck with it and caught on to it quicker and easier (me = xoops user).

I prefer phpBB because it has a very large community of users & developers who can provide support, it has a less restrictive license (GPL).

Also, with phpBB you can get "pre-modded" versions of the board (I've also seen a couple mods that include pre-modified files) which appear to be prohibited by the IPB license.

If you're looking for an easy installation, might I point out that surpass also has a phpBB installer in cPanel.

If you're after more features, then you might want to give IPB a shot. phpBB 2.2 looks like it might be able to give some of the commercial boards a run for their money, but that won't be ready for a while .
