strange activities

Teq posted about some strange activities on the boards.

I had something odd happen the other day. I got viruses sent to my 2 email addresses at nifty. I'm so STUPID I deleted them after looking at the headers. I believe they came from a surpass server, Dime??. And I'm so DUMB I didn't think to report it. Should I report that sort of stuff?

Since I'm not ranked on google it's possible they got the address here. Not saying they did !

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I'm a moderator of http://www.webzila.com who should already have the admin title

Anyway, we've had strange issues of email spoofing as well. We've addressed the issue on our forums so that our members don't get aggrevated by the virus filled emails. However, the virus is only obtained by downloading the attachment in the email. Anyone who has any common sense knows that you NEVER download an attchment without scanning it first. They should also know to NEVER download attachments period from anyone unless they are friends/family (websites or automated emails do not count in any way).

Here is the link where I've pinned the topic to address the issue that we have experienced - http://forum.webzila.com/index.php?showtopic=378

No, honestly, as sad as it may seem, reporting the virii is only a waste of time, bandwidth and other valuable resources. These are generated from end users computers (not the mail servers) and most ISPs don't even respond or react to the complaints. And I can't say that I blame them. Its a numbers game. Virii are responsible for millions of emails a month. You would have to hire an entire department just for tracking and sending emails the the responsible user that has the virus (if it can be tracked).

Just delete them on site. That's all you can really do.

thanks Newdles, but these were actually regular old virus's email and attachment. I didn't have to use a password, does that mean I'm not special enough? Actually, I've had my fair share of those too. *sigh*, not been caught out yet tho.

Thanks Patrick, that's pretty sad news, but perfectly understandable.

Wonder what these, spammers, hackers, virus writers get out of it ....... if it was up to me it'd be a thick ear and a note to their mums !

Satisfaction! Most of the virus writers, hackers, and peddly script kiddies are just that... kids. Your average hacker is probably age 15-17 years old. Some are people that don't get attention in their own personal life and get the satisfaction of doing these things to others just to amuse themselves. The rest are people that have no lives period and have no friends either. They do this sort of thing to have interaction with the world in some form or fashion whether it be good or bad.

There are other categories as well that aren't odd people but people that just did it one day because they could or for just any other reason. However, the question you asked has neverending answers as there could be any reason. Some people cope with things in life through their actions online. One of their relatives might die and that would spawn a virus attack. You never know.

well, I can hack. I have hacked. I do hack. I will continue to hack. Though here's the catch with me. I don't do anything illegal (except for that one time, joking), it's just something for me to do at school to get into my home computer which is set to connect to the internet while I'm in web design to update everything, and for me to access it. about a 10 minute window. I have never taught anyone to hack, and I never will, well, probably won't ever.

As far as Viruses go, I built one, but it was one to kill another virus. it was kind of like steroids for my computer. worked quite well. So I wouldn't say that the people that build them and send them are out to destroy stuff, and they aren't all kids that never have a date. I know a guy that built a virus and sent it to my computer because i ticked him off one time. (that's where my steroids come into play). so sometimes it isn't put out there to destroy the entire community of internet users, sometimes there's a reason behind it, and it's only meant for one person. I just wanted to try to clarify that.

back to the topic at hand. I have been getting a whole lot of emails lately from various yahoo accounts (that bounce back as non-existant most of the time). they have all had a title about mail delivery failure, and then it gives me a link inside the email to view the email. it is a link to an https (secure) site with a .zip ending (zip file download). i am yet to download one, and probably won't until i catch one while im running from a secure partition on my hard drive. The strangest thing is that they are only coming to my wesleyinnovations account, not my artistikrevolution account.

It has nothing to do with hacking, most of the time. Hackers are grossly lumped in with the real scum of the internet. Most hackers don't try to do harm to others systems. Those that do, most likely do not fall into the hacker category, but are more closely "script kiddies."

I'm sure you meant no harm from it, but I just hate that us hackers have a really bad reputation these days. THANKS HOLLYWOOD!

EDIT: Fixed a rogue period, and replaced it with the more appropriate comma.

unfortunately, people say hackers, when they mean crackers. most people aren't even familiar with the term crackers, so they just blame it all on hackers. Plus, some people have to learn to stop believing hollywood with the cracking and stuff. Ney York City is NOT completely automated. You CAN'T hack the city and control the traffic lights. If any city were to go to that, it would be one of the worst ideas any city has ever come up with. I'm sorry to inform some of you, but The Italian Job is not possible from the hackers standpoint. Like miakeru said, I'm sure you meant no offense, but I really agree with miakeru. No offense meant to you either Javaqueen.

oh yeah, surpass rocks
