ftp using browser
I have a reseller account.
I want to make some files on one of my domains available to friends to download, so I tried setting up an ftp account under cPanel with public_ftp as the available folder on the server. I want people to be able to download the files via their browser, so to test it I fired up IE7 and entered into the URL bar ftp://ftp.mydomain.com/ I expected a login box to appear so I could enter user/password into, but instead I got "IE cannot display the webpage". In IE7 if I try ftp://username:password mydomain.com/it does come up with the login box but only the main username/password will work and obviously I don't want to give out my cPanel user-id and password. If I try it in Firefox2 it sits saying "Loading" forever. Anybody able to suggest where I've gone wrong? Thanks in advance

why not just make a page and link the downloads to them, so that in the end no one needs to have any type of password or browser issues?

Hmm, I'm not quite sure why it doesn't work myself? It also doesn't work in FireFox, but I was just told that FF doesn't support it that well, so maybe IE is the same. Now the other URL works fine, like you used. Sorry I couldn't be more help in regards to this.

public_ftp is above the public_html folder and is not accessible for anything except incoming anonymous ftp only.
You need to use the cPanel FTP manager/FTP Accounts and password protect a directory below the public_html folder with it's own username and password. You can then access it with the browser, ( ftp://folderusername:folderpassword yourdomain.tld ), or, with a ftp client using folderusername yourdomain.tld as the username and folderpassword as the password. The client will be jailed in that folder. Keep in mind this directory and any sub-directories below it will be accessible to that user for any manipulation..
