Haugland I'll just quote the brief reason given in the post in the link to Unknowns post at SMF's forum.

Quote:
"Because it makes things, like for example the package manager and attachments, work better."
I have tested this with my test forum at a chmod 755 the package manager dose not work and some attachments and some Mods act weird or quit working.

And from the sounds of if SMF 1.1 final will be setup the same way. I do understand the security issue but the main original script person for SMF see it as not a issue.

And I have a 1 test forum and 3 live forums so it would be a royal pain to change.

Ok, I think I figured it out.

In most cases, 0777 is required in order to allow for file editing, moving or writing. So when an attachment is uploaded, they need 0777 permission on a folder to move it into it.

0777 is required becaues PHP is being run as nobody in these cases where the folder owner is your username.

The way that PHPsuexec is that PHP runs as your username. This means that the operating system sees that you own the file or folder and allows you write with 755 permissions.

So as far as I can see, it *should* work fine.

Yes, 755 should work fine. I haven't had any issues with things like that on mine, but haven't tested SMF on it. I'll try to do that tonight and let you know if I have any problems.

Well with SMF 1.1 RC2 they say they are still some bug fixes to take care of before 1.1 final so hopefully some bug in there is part of the issue.

I have to fix my test forum this week. I broke it last week testing some beta Mods. Messed it up good in the Themes folder. lol

But after I fix it I'll test again and see if I can recreate the issues i had before and share them in more detail.

But I do recall the package manager would not work and some mods would quit working under 755.

Running SMF RC2 on my VPS with PHPsuexec enabled and it works great. No problem at all with 755 folders.

Just so I'm clear - moving to PHP5 also implies to phpsuexec as well, correct? I assume it's a good idea to have my dedicated server upgraded as well?

One followup, semi-offtopic question - Are all these forums moderated now, or am I just on the troublemakers list? I notice my posts don't show up right away anymore, so I assume they are going through an approval process...

thanks

Just to clarify, posts within the Announcement and Testimonial areas are moderated. Can't think of any others at the moment.
