[Big Changes] Dual Core AMD : New Shared Servers
![]() http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...px?i=2397&p=10 http://www.networkworld.com/news/200...eathercom.html http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v20z/index.jsp As you can see, it is well known that dual core AMD processors are out-performing the dual Xeons. The cost is approximately 15% more than dual Xeons but based on the points below it will be a good investment and we are ready for this change: 1. AMDs use approximately 30% less power than dual Xeons. So this is a big plus since the electric bill gets very high. ![]() 2. Dual CORE CPU versus Dual XEON w/hyper threading CPU: Dual Core is a real dual CPU versus a simulated one. See this: http://www.intel.com/personal/deskto...popup/demo.htm 3. We ran a UNIX bench test: Dual Xeon ========= FINAL SCORE 172.3 Dual Core AMD ========= FINAL SCORE 500.3 AMD provides flexibility and cushion for process intensive sites that burst in CPU usage. This way we can lessen adverse effects as much as possible for other users in a shared hosting environment. Uptime is our #1 priority. Whether it is server uptime or network uptime. ![]() ![]()

Hopefully this upgrade will make some of the "script gone insane" issues less noticeable. Props.

Another reason I'm a surpass fan! (prolly the OLDEST one too...)
TO complete my understanding, will these be: Servers with ONE opteron-x2 OR Servers with TWO opteron-x2 Those graphs you pasted in don't show which one Surpass will be using vs which one you used to use... Oh, Kayla? Can you fix the forums? The avatars and stuff are stuck to the top of the messages instead of off the left like they belong.

few questions:
1. (guessing from one of the links above) Are you using sun boxen? (sun x64 servers get me hot and bothered. ) 2. I know you are only using these for new additions, but when could we expect the full shared server line to be updated? 3. Will you be taking advantage of the 64 bit-ness these servers will have with RHEL for AMD64? (not that we'd notice/need the difference) Or maybe you'll be using a different OS/setup? 4. Will you be taking advantage of the NX bit? (silly i know, but still wondering)
