Smile SSL for the clueless

I searhed for thread with the "SSL" key word and realized that I have no idea how it works (in Surpass servers or not)...

I barely know the following:

1. if browser sends out a request (POST or GET) in the form "https://www.adomain.com/asecurepage.php?...", the data will be scrambled with some encryption rule. (say a credit card #).

2. when the server receives the request, it will need to decipher the parameters before one can work on it.

Now, I know there is an SSL manager in my host control panel and all my clients cPanel and I did play around with it and seemed to get the private key etc for one of my clients all right.

But I really have no clue on what the next step is....

When I type 'https://www.myclientsdomain.com', I got a cPanel (cyan) screen saying 'There is no webpage configured at this address'...

I know some how https leads to a different place than http, but where is it? That is, where should I put the pages? When I checked with the file manager with my client's site, I see an 'ssl' folder, so I tried to put an 'index.htm' there and it still does not work?

Well, I really would appreciate if some kind soul would tell me how I should proceed...

Making it just through WHM without actually purchasing it will get you a dummy certificate. I wont be verified by the Certificate Authority. The following thread should be stickied but it isnt.

How to install a SSL certificate in WHM/cPanel

I hope that helps.

Many thanks to Tracer for the reply and for the nice tutorial.

So what I got is actually just a dummy one and won't work. Basically, there are two major components I am missing: the dedicated IP and the paid certificate, right?

Now, I tried to look around in WHM and could not find the place to do either of the two. Does dedicated IP mean dedicated service package in Surpass case? I'd really appreciate if you could give me the link for paying the SSL licence too...

Thanks again...

You can purchase the SSL cert through Surpass and a dedicated IP address all for just $115 a year. That includes the dedicated IP for one year, the SSL cert for one year, and all of the installation process.

If you want to purchase your own SSL cert, you will still need to get a dedicated IP address for the site you want the SSL cert for. That is $25 per year. The form for this addon (and one for the SSL cert which includes the Dedicated IP address) is here http://www.surpasshosting.com/addon.php

If you have any questions about prices or support, http://desk.surpasshosting.com Submit a ticket and they will answer it in no time or you can just ask here but I am not sure someone could answer it.
