True, Haugland. In that case it would be wise to include leave the index.html for a while and add the redirect rule mentioned in one of the previous posts.

Don't mess with httpd.conf -- place that DirectoryIndex stuff in your .htaccess. You can even specify the order in which it will inspect and search for index.* files. You could even have something like index.jpg be the defaukt, I think...!

although i put that in there, i agree... you can use the .htaccess file for that and is MUCH less dangerous!

Well, yes it should automatically pick up.

I think someone was referring to making a redirect so visitors who have the index.html booked marked would be redirected to index.php

Or something. Don't mind me if I'm confused.

Anything named index will be picked up as the first page to go to, I dont believe the file extension matters.

File extension does indeed matter, there's a list of which a browser will read first. This incase you have index.html, index.htm, index.php, index.whatever in your folder, and I believe also default.whatever will be picked up too. But if you only have one in the folder, then it will pick that one up all on its own.

But making index.html redirect to index.php might be a good idea for bcinelli.

You only need index.php as long as there's no other index files in the directory.

Ex. http://www.surmunity.com/ (no redirection)
