Mambo probably, but only because it looks nicer. They're both unnecessarily difficult and time consuming to get to grips with.

I agree that Mambo does look better out of the box. Xoops is, umm..., kinda plain in comparison. However, that is just the default theme. There are many themes available to make it look the way you want, or get it close enough that you can edit it yourself to get the final result you are looking for.
While Mambo does look nice after a fresh install, I learned how to use Xoops first, and found the community to be very helpful, and just never moved on to try anything else. I don't know what modules are available for Mambo, but it seems like there's a Xoops module for just about everything.  For anyone who thinks it's hard to use, PM me if you can, or post here, and I'll be glad to help you. Trust me, if I can use it, it can't be that hard.  John

yeah, if the look of xoops is what makes people go to mambo instead, they are missing something great. i've moddified the original default them on both of these sites to be what i want:
http://www.lindavester.net http://www.badmoviereview.com I had another but decided to do it without xoops instead...it would be a bit too complicated for the person I made the site for. I'm testing out mambo, but it's not as easy as I expected (from the way people talk about it).

It's probably the same for Mambo, but with Xoops it's a conceptual issue. It just doesn't make sense. Then something clicks, and it all makes sense. The trick to helping someone new is getting them to that "clicking" point.
I just never got there with Mambo. I'm still at the "just doesn't make sense" phase, and the lack of time has kept me there. John

so.... anybody here willing to throw down and make a theme for my site for xoops....? for el casho? muchos pesos... or something.. i dunno... i just want to use a CMS, but hate the default themes and most of all the themes I find... if anybody would be interested in helping me out with this.. PM me or something so we can talk about prices... or something...
edit: and also helpin a brother out learning how to add my own pages to the thing.. and such...
