Going to shut down my site but want to save everything.

I have to shut down my site for a long time. Is there any way I can do that while saving everything on my site? I’m going to reopen it later and don’t want to rewrite the code and loose everything in the forum. I noticed in the cpanel page there’s a link call Backups. Is that it? Is that what I need? I don’t know how to use it. Is there a tutorial page that show me how?

Yep, just go to the backups. You can either generate a full back-up (which keeps your CPanel settings) or a home back-up. Later when you want to restore the files, you can either upload the Home Back-up through CPanel or have Surpass restore the Full Back-up that you provide.

All you do is click "backup" then choose which type of back-up you want.

And dont forget the MySQL backup if you are using databases (like a forum).

Just save them all to a CD-R if you have access to one and then you dont have to worry about a hard drive crash (heaven forbid).

In that case, Tracer, it's best to leave a couple copies in various places, just in case... a harddrive can crash, but a cd can just as easily (more easily) be scratched. I try to back up my most vital things on at least two harddrives... As of yet, haven't kept my cd-r backup up to date, but will get to that eventually... But Tracer offers great advice, if it's important, don't leave it up to fate to protect the files.

Yup....I can vouch for this - having lost my entire website earlier this year due to sloppy upkeep of backups. *sigh*

A company did a test on CDRs to see if its really true if the media have long shelf lives. They saved files to the media, then stored then in a proper and locked environment.
So after 18 of the 36 months they planned on reviewing them. They found out that about 40% was lost on the disc.

Harddrives dont crash/break if there not in use and will not lose the data after many years.

CDs are still good for short term storage though. I know one of the first CDs I burnt won't read properly and it's pretty much scratch and dust free. Rest are all fine though.. just the one.

I'll be getting 2 or 3 portable drives... 1 for music, and 1 or 2 for data back-ups ... whenever I can afford to.

yeah CDRs are good for short peroids (under a year). I have stop buying them cause you can't recycle them

I also backup all my website files on multiple hard drives. You never know when one can fail. I usually try to backup onto a CD-R once in a while too.

I'll have to check my collection of music cd's that I've burned and have just left set in their cases. They've been there for over 3 years now untouched. I'm guessing as stated before, 40% of my music could be lost! I should invest in a few portable drives as well. Those seem to be the best choice right now.
