Don't use Fantastico for Xoops. Install it manually by downloading the files for 2.0.10 at Xoops.org, like Ozzy linked. Then, unzipp it and follow the instructions in the zip/tar file.

Xoops or Mambo is what is suggested the most on this forum. There are experienced users from both sides who host here. I myself am running a couple xoops sites (about to launch a third soon). I just don't suggest using Fantastico to install it with, as it's known to mangle the Xoops installation.

I just popped out to your site to see if you had gotten xoops loaded ok. Looks like you have Geeklog installed now. Were you still wanting to run xoops, or have you decided to give Geeklog a try instead? If you're still wanting to load xoops, I'd be glad to walk you through it. I've pretty much got it down to less than 5 minutes, including the database creation. Believe me, there's not much to it. If you have decided to go with Geeklog, post back and tell us what you think. ![]() John

Yeah, xoops installation is very easy. I found myself chmodding the folders and files automatically the other day lol...didn't have to think about it, just did it. Then fixed them again before the script told me to change things again, set up stuff in the back area from memory automatically....I really need to get out more.

David,
Same here. After awhile, it's just second nature. Here's one thing that I found really saves on time. For a new install, I take the contents of the "html" folder (from the xoops download), add in any modules that I know I want to upload (I'm a big fan of TinyD, and ususally have 2-3 copies installed), and tar it up into 1 big tarball (might be easier for Windows folks to make a zip file). I then ftp that file into my public_html folder, and use my cPanel filemanager to extract the contents of the file. Since I don't include the html folder itself, only the contents, within seconds I have everything out there ready to install (after changing the necessary file permissions of course). It's so much faster to transfer 1 big file rather than the thousands of tiny files that make up the tar (or zip) file. I even have all of the extra modules there ready to install. It literally takes the install time down to a few minutes. ![]() John
