I then ftp that file into my public_html folder, and use my cPanel filemanager to extract the contents of the file. Since I don't include the html folder itself, only the contents, within seconds I have everything out there ready to install (after changing the necessary file permissions of course). It's so much faster to transfer 1 big file rather than the thousands of tiny files that make up the tar (or zip) file. I even have all of the extra modules there ready to install.
Hi John.

I used to use the same method but recently the cp file manager seems to extract all files from a zip and set them to permission 600, which can't be read. Is there any way to stop the filemanager doing this? Am I missing anything?

I've contacted support re this and would need their help to set them to 644 otherwise doing it through FTP will take ages.

I haven't done one in a while, but will need to do one sometime this week. I'll see what happens. Could be a CPanel upgrade issue. Looks like you're on pass11. I'm on pass4. We'll see if it happens to me too, and start comparing Cpanel versions, and anything else to help us track it down. I'd hate to lose the shortcut, as it does make it so much faster and simpler.

I'll post back once I've done the install.

If you find out anything in the meantime, please let us know.

Thanks.

John

Hi John.

I can confirm the all files are extracted as 600 and folders as 700. This should be at least 644 for files and 744 for folders. Good idea about the CP version. Mine is 10.8.0-RELEASE 27.

I got a reply back from support but it was a shrug off (use cpanel file manager or an ftp program to change permissions). The zip I uploaded contained over 5000 files so it would take some time . So not a good suggestion.

Tell me how your goes.

McNaz,

I just uploaded the tar file and used the filemanager to extract it. Files defaulted to 744, directories to 755, just as I would have expected.

I'm on pass4, and my CPanel is version 10.2.0-STABLE 83, which appears to be a number of versions behind yours.

I would reopen your ticket with support. There is a problem with the filemanager in your install of CPanel. A filemanager that doesn't respect file permissions is pretty worthless. Telling you to use ftp to fix the permissions after the fact is pretty worthless as well. Sounds like a level 1 answer.

If they give you the same answer when you reopen the ticket, ask them to escalate it to a higher level support, as you need this fixed. There are people there that will understand that this is a problem. You just didn't get to one of them last time.

I just hope they don't upgrade me anytime soon.

Keep us posted on how it works out for you.

John
