here is the type of CMS i have been looking for:
#1: A easy-to-use CMS that has a very easily configurable template format for customization of the "look" of the site. #2: A user (log-in) database for the CMS to allow guests, as well as content creators/editors/proofreaders (pretty much all CMSes have this) #3: A Forum like phpBB that is compatible with the above user database #4: An Event Calendar like WebCalendar that is compatible with the user database. #5 (optional): photo-support like Gallery with a compatible user database I think Mambo wins with #1 (altho no CMS has a REALLY REALLY easily customizable template format). i was planning on using Mambo with phpBB and WebCalendar and Gallery, but obviously it is a HUGE HUGE HUGE disadvantage that you have to keep 4 separate user databases, or somehow keep them synced with a regular cron job and script. This has kept me from moving ahead. I am surprised that no one has come up with some kind of standard mechanism to keep such separate (and independently developed) modules in sync with a single CMS. Moreso than #1, i would say #2, 3, 4, and 5 are more important (that ALL the modules use a common single user login database). Although #1 is obviously important too. How can I get Mambo and/or Xoops to have ONE single user database that is used among the CMS (content view/edit control), Forums (something like phpBB), Event Calenadar (like WebCalendar or better), and Image management (like Gallery)? Any thoughts/opinions? Suggestions?

I had been playing with both but now just playing with Xoops. Just to much to Mambo that i feel I don't need. A little bloaty as I saw it posted someplace else.
I'm holding off with the Xoops 2.2.x for now though. I think they have a few bugs to work out. So working with 2.0.13 But I like the look, feel, navigation and mods Xoops has going for it better so far myself.

takabanana,
#1 - I can't compare between the 2 systems, as I never figured out how to use mambo, but I know that xoops can be made to look just about anything you want it to. #2-#5 - Xoops has you covered on these. David already pointed out the phpbb and gallery modules. There are in fact several forum and photo gallery modules that you can choose from. There are also several calendars, each with slightly different feature sets. Just choose the one that meets your needs the best. As for a single database, that pretty much comes standard by using xoops modules. You get a single point for user authentication as well as group permissions. As mentioned by skipdawg, stick with xoops 2.0.13 for now. Xoops 2.2 is a major code rewrite. They have since released 2.2.1 to fix the bugs that only surfaced after a final release, however, there a number of modules that will need to be updated by their authors to work properly with 2.2.1. In 3 months, I will probably recommend it. For a new user today, stick with 2.0.13. The xoops site will only advertise downloading the latest release, but the previous stable release is available. If you have issues finding it, please let me know. ![]() John

I would also suggest xoops over mambo but I'm more familiar with xoops. Mambo has its charm too but xoops is likely to be easier to learn.
I'd also echo the suggestion to stick with 2.0.x and keep it updated as long as devel is active. Then upgrade when you're very comfortable with stability of the latest and there is a good reason to switch. But I'd also caution complete newbies from almost any CMS. As easy as these apps have become you are still running a public server that has the potential of blowing up in your face if you aren't prepared. One lazy moment and you could find all your work gone. xoops.org itself was hacked, not via xoops but by an out of date Apache version. Hey it was working fine so it was forgotten until it was too late. This is the kind of thing that a newbie could easily miss. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" isn't a wise motto on the internet. CMS apps are pretty easy but they aren't bullet proof and they still require (IMHO) a basic knowledge of the underlying functions, maintenance, and security issues. If you don't understand CHMOD beyond following the instructions then don't think about any CMS.

Mambo can integrate simpleboard, or SimpleMachines forums. It can also integrate several different gallery components, and has event calendars - and a module that allows for events with registration.
