Help for first time xoops user?
Well after not getting my custom dns on my new domain to work I gave up and am using the dizinc dns for now.
I installed xoops via fantastico on www.cartenterprises.com. After playing with phpcoin on another site earlier this evening, I thought I could handle this with minimal problem. Wrong. How does one move the blocks around the page as opposed to one column on the left? I thought there might be a template to play with to get used to xoops, but not that I've found yet. And how do you add modules to it? I know I want to use phpcoin in it if possible, unless xoops has a cms of its own built in. Also forums, faq. Once I get placement and appearance figured out I'll add content. I'm sooo confused. Where do I go from here? |

First thing I would recommend is that you uninstall the fantastico version and reinstall it via FTP. The reason is because I've run into problems with the Fantastico installs of xoops. But that's just my personal recommendation there.
To move around the blocks, go to the admin area. There should be a place under System Admin called "Blocks". This lets you put the blocks under which ever column you want. Adding modules is done via ftp. You download modules from the http://www.xoops.org website and upload them to your site. There are already a few modules in the package (forum, faqs, contact, downloads, etc). To install them, you go to the modules section of the System Admin area. As far as I know, there is no phpcoin module. You can check over at their website though. |

CMS section? You mean a way to put in static html content? The one that David and I use is called Tiny-D. Works like a charm. I will send you links later. FTP - You will definitely need an ftp client. You can use the File Manager in your CPanel, but ftp is a lot quicker (at least for me). I've had really good luck with FileZilla. You can either google for it or I will post a link for you later today. It's going to be bumpy right in the beginning until you ge the hang of it, but after that, it's all good. ![]() Also, if you install before I return, install 2.0.13.1. The new 2.2.2 series isn't quite ready for newcomers - yet. ![]() Will post back here later. John

Well, I've got a couple more minutes, so I'll put some links up for you.
FTP - There are a number of free ones, and everyone has their favorite. Mine happens to be FileZilla. You can find it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/. Unlike other "Zilla" projects, it only runs on Windows, but I won't hold it against them. ![]() CMS - Content Management System - Technically, that's what xoops is. I'm guessing that you are referring to a way of putting static content (html) into your site. There are several modules that can do this, but the one that David and I are using is called "Tiny-D". Odd name, but the original module, written by a fellow named Chapi, was called "TinyContent". It was taken and modified by a coder that goes by the name GI-Joe, and made so that you could have multiple copies of the module on your site. The advantages of that will become clearer as you learn the system. He called it "TinyContent-Duplicatable". This has since been shortened to "Tiny-D". ![]() GI-Joe also has other modules that may be of interest, including "piCal", a full featured calendar module, myAlbum-P, one of several gallery modules, and a number of others. You can find him and his modules at http://www.peak.ne.jp/xoops/. Most of the modules can be found at the main Xoops site, http://www.xoops.org, but it doesn't always have the latest versions. Definitely not in the case of GI-Joe's modules. If you need help getting xoops installed (2.0.13.1), let us know, and we'll help you out. ![]() John

David, you and John are so sweet.
Quick question. I've been trying to get the hang of the blocks. I notice when I adjust blocks viewable on top page and get the results I want. Then I look at the list of blocks viewable on just the faq page for example, I don't want all the same ones as on the top page so I uncheck them. Then they disappear from the top page. The good news is I am getting used to positioning them I think. I forgot all about the file manager in whm. Duh. john, i looked at your site, I like the calendar and weather. More blocks! Sorry, I know I wrote cms but meant billing like coin. How do you guys handle billing? Thanks again both of you. |

Your blocks on the top page that aren't viewable on the Faqs page may only be set to "Top page". If you click "edit" next to the block, it will give you a list of areas it will show in.
Speaking of GI-Joe, he also has a module called Protector, which is one that many are advised to use. It helps protect against certain types of DDos attacks on a site, according to the way it read (atleast from what I remember). I don't use Xoops on my main site, so I just use Paypal. |

I found that place to choose what pages a module is visible on just before I read your reply.
Ok, I downloaded a module or two. How do I know where to install it, what directory, folder, etc? And your post brought to mind, down the road I do want to be able to have paypal on my site, will it be possible? Thanks. Last edited by valmg; August 23rd, 2005 at 11:17 PM.. Reason: add to post |
