AJAX isn't the 'new Flash' because they've both got completly different purposes. Flash (for the most part) is exactly that, it adds flash to a site - rotating banners or games, special animated banners and the like. It's not (normally) used as a server-client communication mechanism, which is what AJAX is. AJAX isn't structured like Flash is - Flash is it's own technology whereas AJAX is more a specification - it's a term given to how you use a certain set of technologies rather than the actual technology itself.
Also, AJAX is more for updating things - so you'd use it when you add a comment on a blog article to post the comment back to the server and update the page - removing the comment box and inserting the new comment (How To Stop Blog Spam 101 - remove the comment box after a comment is posted). edit: I had a point to add here that was really enlightening, but now it's gone. I think he means the new Flash in the way of it's going to have a lot of hype, but end up hardly being used because it's not as special as it's currently made out to be. I agree in a way, but I also think it's already showing it's place of serving it's use correctly. Something Flash wasn't capable of doing.
