I need a hero.
Again. In past episodes my heroes have been John and David.
And hello by the way. I have really enjoyed working with xoops. I have it running on 3 different sites now. All installations were done with Fantastico. I tried installing it manually on 2 of them in the past and couldn't get it to work so I obviously was doing something wrong. I didn't worry about the actual install as it had installed correctly through Fantastico. I now need to set it up on another site. I installed through Fantastico today and lo and behold it seemed to install but my site loaded a completely blank page. I'm willing to try a manual install once again if someone would either be so kind as to walk me through it, or if someone has good instructions they'd be willing to share that'd be helpful too. Thanks. On a semi related note. Is Mambo as easy to pick up as Xoops? That's one of the next things I want to learn. Last edited by valmg; November 8th, 2005 at 3:26 PM. |

A lot of the time, when it loads a blank page due to a fantastico install it's because something in the database isn't right. You have reinspired me to write up the Xoops thing I was going to write. It's going to be in my list of things to make, on top of my new "Welcome to Surpass" manual, which may be rather large actually.
As for mambo, I wasn't able to really switch over very well. John doesn't seem too keen on it either, when it's a xoops vs. mambo thing (from what I remember reading atleast). BigJohn on the other hand...he might be able to explain the in's and out's of it or shed some light as to it's ease of switching or just using, since I know he's used both.

You could try uninstalling and reinstalling again, since it's fantastico. That may solve your blank page problem.

I've been meaning to write a xoops install doc too, but never seem to get around to it.
Val - If you want to do a manual install, I'd be happy to walk you through it. We can work through it via email, or if you can do it during evening hours, I can walk you through it over the phone (Sprint = free nationwide long distance, unlimited offpeak after 7pm ).It's drop dead easy (that's why I can do it). Promise. ![]() Just let me know. John

installing Mambo using FTP and phpMyAdmin (or just the database tools in Cpanel) is as easy as falling off a chair. Oh... it's not mambo anymore... JOOMLA!

what learning curve! Depends what you want to do. Xoops is more equal in administration to Postnuke - which is why I tried it first.
It really does depend on what you want to do with your site. See mine: http://newsite.stegenga.net John PS - this is my Xoops = http://americanhomebrewer.com

I never tried any other cms until xoops. I want to put together a site that requires no or little html knowledge, so that different people within an organization can log in and enter their own info, rather than me doing it for them. I may install it on another domain I have that I'm not doing much with and play. It will need a few pages of text, nice photo gallery, as well as a calendar. The system needs to be very easy to use for these people. I know I can put it together in xoops in almost no time, but I can't get the fantastico install to work and I have problems doing the install manually. John was kind enough to offer to walk me through a manual install, this way I can figure out where it is I have gone wrong in previous attempts. I looked in the admin area of mambo. Granted I was only there for all of say 2 minutes, but it looked different than the xoops admin. I didn't spend enough time there to get a feel for how difficult it would be. Thanks. Valmg Edit for ps - I just looked at the old stegenga.net done with postnuke. Which got me wondering about that too. Possibly another thing to add to my list of things to learn.
