From what I know, the option to is install it is there... but it should not actually install. Either way, all programs, even phpMyChat, are not allowed. If you have one running, I suggest uninstalling it immediately, otherwise your account could be suspended.

Re: Chat programs are NOT allowed
Kayla, Ancyru, and DewKnight,
I recently discovered that the java applet that ablenet.org is hosting for my sites contains some (optional, but they insist upon it) material that I find objectionable (namely some rude and obscene epithets that visitors can auto-use, that are very much against the site rules). I was considering hosting the applet myself somewhere. It's javirc5.4, and I've spent the day looking over the code. Is it okay for that program to be hosted on my webspace, since it's just a java applet that allows users to connect to an IRC chat hosted elsewhere? I absolutely won't install it if you say no, but after finding some of the ridiculous things that Ablenet's staff added to the current applet, without bothering to ask me, I'd like to have more control over it. Let me know, please. ![]() Last edited by Ardath Rekha; February 21st, 2006 at 3:27 PM.. |

Re: Chat programs are NOT allowed
I would wait for someone else to confirm this, but as far as I know, you can install a java applet that connects to a remote server.
EG: You install an applet on sh75.surpasshosting.com and it connects to irc.freenode.net This is perfectly OK to do in my understanding; however, I would wait for an additional response. |

As long as it doesn't start causing issues on the server, it would be fine. If we notice the load on the server going up and it's due to your site, I will let you know about it. It would probably be fine though. |

Re: Chat programs are NOT allowed
The key here is = if you execute code on the server, that's bad. If you just serve a script that runs on a PC, that's okiedokie!

Re: Chat programs are NOT allowed
*nodding* Looking over the code itself, it's an html-page with plug-ins. The scripts load onto the computer as the html page calls on them, and when they finish loading, that's when you're able to connect to the specified IRC server elsewhere. We use the Ablenet network, but by having the applet located on our webspace, it means that if we switch networks we don't have to beg the new network for a new applet; we just change that bit of code in the html page and we're flying. So this is a huge help. Thank you.
