He's just realistically asking who would want to steal them. Is there actually a user-group that you think would or are you doing it just because. I'm thinking the comment was made to discover the motivation behind blocking right-clicks.

I'm with Dew on this. I find right click protection annoying, especially if we need to see page code to help solve a problem. That, and I hate having media files open in my browser. If there is an audio or video file that I want to see, I prefer right clicking and saving the file to watch rather than have it load up and possibly crash my browser.

That's how I read it.

People copy links to images all over, even on non popular sites. It consumes bandwidth when people just hotlink, and it's stealing when they just take it. Might not seem like much to some people, but it does have the annoyances.

Especially on member based websites, people steal other people's pictures all the time. I have people asking me to add a no-right click, but I haven't because like everyone else has said on here, it's easily bypassed.

I was on flickr one day, they actually do a different trick. They have a clear 1 by 1 gif, and then for an image, they place the 1 by 1 stretched out on top of the image.

i.e. something along the lines of
<img src="myimage.jpg" width="250" height="100"><div style="position:relative;left:-250px;top:-100px;"><img src="1x1.gif" width="250" height="100"></div>

Pretty nice trick, but still bypassable by simply viewing source.

Absolutely.

You could convert all the images that you didn't want stolen to .swf... Then if someone wanted the file they'd have to download the the swf (that they found in "view source") and extract the image in flash which would probably compromise the resolution of the image. You could try to protect the swf file with a password, but there is always a backdoor to getting into the file.

Even if you use all of the above features mentioned in this thread someone still could press "Print Screen." It wouldn't be the best way to get your image but they would still have it.

Like pizzicar mentioned, I would watermark the image if you're really concerned like google does on http://maps.google.com

or like gettyimages does

He/she has been replying to a couple of my subjetcs in a very rude raw way... I dont like it and, I want it stopped... I like to come here and, ask questions in the best way that I can. Im not a pro at all this and, im willing to learn when Iv got questions to ask.. So please understand me.. and, keep the raw abusive comments for others, thanks.

He/she also treats me as a 12 year old.. PLEASE STOP.

Note: replace all references of "hacker/s" with Forum Members.

Dealing with rudeness

Much of what looks like rudeness in [technical] circles is not intended to give offence. Rather, it's the product of the direct, cut-through-the-BS communications style that is natural to people who are more concerned about solving problems than making others feel warm and fuzzy.

When you perceive rudeness, try to react calmly. If someone is really acting out, it is very likely a senior person on the list or newsgroup or forum will call him or her on it. If that doesn't happen and you lose your temper, it is likely that the person you lose it at was behaving within the hacker community's norms and you will be considered at fault. This will hurt your chances of getting the information or help you want.

On the other hand, you will occasionally run across rudeness and posturing that is quite gratuitous. The flip-side of the above is that it is acceptable form to slam real offenders quite hard, dissecting their misbehavior with a sharp verbal scalpel. Be very, very sure of your ground before you try this, however. The line between correcting an incivility and starting a pointless flamewar is thin enough that hackers themselves not infrequently blunder across it; if you are a newbie or an outsider, your chances of avoiding such a blunder are low. If you're after information rather than entertainment, it's better to keep your fingers off the keyboard than to risk this.

(Some people assert that many hackers have a mild form of autism or Asperger's Syndrome, and are actually missing some of the brain circuitry that lubricates “normal” human social interaction. This may or may not be true. If you are not a hacker yourself, it may help you cope with our eccentricities if you think of us as being brain-damaged. Go right ahead. We won't care; we like being whatever it is we are, and generally have a healthy skepticism about clinical labels.)

cowsource you mentioned in another post that you like to come here and, help out.. which is nice of you and, I appreciate it alot. But being called 12 years old from somone who deosnt even know me a bit is very abusive. I can feel it right through my computer who is nice to me and, who is not. Im not a hacker and, like I said, im a very nice person.. Im not as smart as most of you are here but, im learning and, doing my best with all of this. So those abusive raw comments he/she can keep to themselves, and im not making a flamwar here im just saying what I feel. I pay to come here and, I dont wanna her those things said to me.. I like the way David, mr fern, Kayla.. and, a couple other.. thats it for me, gotta get back to work.

bye
