Lost Ownership of Joomla components/mods/mambots

Hi Guys,

Im tearing my hair out here. I dont know whether some of you have come across this before but after a routine Joomla install all my folders and files and all extensions etc were under my ownership (ftp access and through Joomla Xplorer). Now after installing new components and modules suddenly Im locked out - the files are owned by nobody (99) and I really need to be able to install and uninstall stuff regularly so this is hugely annoying.

I have done a bit of googling and searching on this forum but it seems a coomon problem on shared hosting... Unfotunately getting Surpass simply to chown the files and folders everytime this happens (almost everyday for me) is ridiculous! What am I doing wrong? And does anyone understand my problem?

When you upload the modules and such to joomla, it does that because php is running as nobody (I think it's something like that), so any files it creates are owned by the user running it (nobody).. Servers with phpsuexec eliminate this, as php runs as your user, so any files it creates are owned by you.. I believe you could request to either be moved to a server that has phpsuxec, or request that it be installed on your server.

Of course, if it is already installed.. then something must be wrong...

Found a partial solution

Hi there i found a partial solution to the problem.
With the owner 99 you cant change or upload any file to the directory's.
With joomlaxplorer you can change permissions so you can add, delete or change files (nog ownership)

you can download it at:

may thanks guys - Um I havent found a suitable solution yet and even joomxplorer doesnt do what i want it to.

Im on sh80 by the way.

I have seen lots of references to this but no out-and-out conclusive fix.

It seems the Joomla developers are working on the fix in the upcoming 1.5 beta release! yay!
