I am assuming that you are using a Linux based server and not a windows server. I am not aware of a linux program that will allow version tracking and management of shared spreadsheets (but that does not mean one does not exist).

I am also assuming that you mean an excel file that is residing in a directory on your server and not somehow displayed as part of your web page.

One suggestion is to come up with a versioning naming scheme such as name the file with a date/hour name naming format (such as 9_26_06_09_JP) which shows that I (JP) edited the file on September 26th at 9:00. That way you know when and who updated the file last. If the person has FTP or root access then this should work. You or your counterpart would ftp the file down to your pc to work on it then upload the changed file with the new name. You might also rename the file on the server while working on it so you don't both have the file at the same time (such as JP_working) so you know I have the file.

If you are looking for a program to do this for you, perhaps someone else knows of one.

Good luck and let us know more info if this is not what you are looking for.

Well I uploaded the excel spreadsheet to my website so is that my problem. See once you change it and go to close out it ask you where do you want to save a copy of the file. but it does not change it on the website for when you go back to look at it.

I don't think you can save directly unless you are running a windows based server (I would be happy to be in error ) I think you are going to have to use an FTP program to get the file to modify then ftp the saved file back to the server. Some FTP programs let you create custom commands to automate a lot of file movement and naming. If you use a naming scheme like I mentioned, you won't have the problem of both of you updating the file at the same time.

Perhaps someone else can come up with a better idea.
