database crashes when adding new content

after i import an existing database from a local install of joomla to surpass and try to add a new menu link or content, my site crashes and i have to restore the database for the live site to show again. otherwise nothing will show on my homepage, but the backend still comes up. when i delete that one menu item i added, everything in mainmenu is moved to the trash.

this picture is what i got right after i added a static menu link

could it be that my surpass mySQL is ver 4.0.27-standard
and my local mysql is ver 5.0.21-community-nt ????

Most likely. If you use phpMyAdmin on your local, export your database by selecting the 4.XX option to match your surpass version.

yep. i tried that.. no luck.
now i'm beginning to think its with the user permissions of my site. when i install something through the backend of joomla the owner of those installed files becomes 'nobody'. joomla forums say its about the suexec.. i'm still awaiting phpsuexec for my shared reseller server

Get support to set your permissions correctly. If PHPSUEXEC is running, you must be the owner of all files, and they must all be set to 644 permissions. All folders must be 755.
