I've tried changing the permission on a few files and folders and once I hit "change" the file manager refreshes with the files having the exact same restriction level as before. And going back in, to change it again, the original level is still entered. I'm attempting to change the permission from 644 to 666 and it's on files that I've uploaded. Why can't I get the change to take effect? I'm sure it's something simple that I'm overlooking...

Yes, that is a known bug for cpanel. Sometimes it does actually change the file permissions, but just doesn't show the updates. If you can't get it to work, as a last resort you can always email support and mention your user info and files, and we can do it.

Ok...I know jack about any of this stuff (learning as I go), so as much help as anybody can give me would be appreciated. I looked into it a little and (I could be totally off, so correct me if I'm wacked) basically any FTP utility with "CHMOD" will allow me to make these changes. Is this right? I don't necessarily have to find one with Secure Shell (SSH)...or do I? Is SSH just an extra precaution for FTP? Or do you recommend having it anyway? If not, then which of these FTP utilities with CHMOD capabilities do you suggest? SmartFTP or CoreFTP Lite? CoreFTP says it has SFTP/SSH. Would that be the better of the two? Or am I totally crocked here, on the wrong path, and neither of these will solve my problem?
Anyone?...........Anyone?........... Oh yeah...and the more idiot-proof of these two FTPs, the better. Right now I'm just uploading files from Dreamweaver (quite simple) and don't really have the hosting technical jargon down yet. |

Any FTP program should do nicely.

Let's keep things separate here.
SSH is a secure access method to the server. It allows you to run commands on the server. It is a Secure Shell (TELNET) to the server. With that tool, you can edit, remove, move as if you are sitting in front of the server. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method/tool that allows you to TRANSFER files only. SSH or TELNET would allow you the ability to CHMOD. FTP would not. Yes, CuteFTP or WU_FTP (something like that) or any of the graphical FTP clients will allow you to see the accurate permissions of your files. Just be cautious, setting a file permission wrong will likely disrupt correct functioning of your site or security. Just follow the instructions you were given and you should be ok. |
