Yup:

Please type the name of the city where Surpass is located. This city is in Florida and can be found on our About page. (This question is to deter spam robots!)

Look around for a plugin for Askimet, an anti-spam app'

I've recently started using SMF and there is an Akismet mod that I've installed and it seems to work...

Although, your problem is ghost members not Viagra posts...
Captcha it is.

This has worked *really* well. There has not been spam since, or any random bots signing up for accounts. Nothing.

It certainly could annoy someone to have to go look at a page and find an answer to a riddle... but it's better than installing all kinds of things that may or may not work. Plus it doesn't seem anyone has had a problem with it yet, and we're still getting the same amount of sign ups as before.

I would resort to authorizing people by hand through the database before using Captcha.
