how to prevent forum spam
This will be the first post with the serverload pic. how it works!
i used to have an XMB board but everyday spammers (bots) will signup but never post any thing. all their motive is to include their web site in their profile only. does any body know how to prevent bots from signing up at our forums? |

I have my forum closed to all but registered users and then I have registration by admin permission only. If you go to my forum you can't even view the forums unless you are registered and you can only register if I allow you.

We started getting a big rush of spam, but Kayla put in a little quick check when registering, which I believe is still there. There is a box that asks where Surpass is located, and points you exactly where to find it. Something like that is good, unless of course it's actually a person registering and spamming, or if they target your site specifically, not just happen to hit your site.

I use SMF which now has a decent Advanced Visual Verification mod that has made a big difference in stopping allot of bots and the rest I nuke before they can finish a registration.
And I have it setup where all new members have very limited privileges so they can be watched from the start to make sure they are not bots, spammers or the like. I have 3 Global Moderators on my forums assisting so that is a big help too. ![]()
