I searched through this whole section and saw one thread on it, but it didn't make much sense to me as the person posting had already used it.
I'm curious about the hotlink protection and what it does and if it is something I should use. I've been told I should look into it, but I don't understand what it does and all that. Anyone help? Thanks! |

Ok, hotlinking. Let's say you have a site with pictures of models. Maybe the viewer pays some sort of fee to see the pictures. Then let's say that I have a similar site, but I don't actually have any pictures. I set up my site so when someone clicks to see a picture the browser actually gets the picture from your site. If you type in the actual address of one of your pictures it will show up. ie: www.models.com/picture/lisa.jpeg This will actually skip the web page and just give you just the picture. The reason you don't want this is because you are allotted a certain amount of transfers (bandwidth) each month. If you go over this you have to pay more. If I am hotlinking your pictures I'm using your bandwidth, not mine. See the drawback. The server keeps track of who is asking for the pictures so you can set it so only people at your site can see the pictures. If another website tries to get the pictures it won't let them.
Good luck, Raul |

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. Now I got it.
So basically, when doing the hotlink thing (as I do have a lot of photos on my site) it shows two URLs to allow access: http://mysite.com http://www.mysite.com Those are the only two sites I should allow to see images on my site? This way, people can't link photos back to my site and all? Thanks for the help. |

Yes, those are the default settings. So if someone is not at your site they cannot see the pics. You can test if it is working here: http://www.htmlbasix.com/disablehotlinking.shtml Ypu will need to know the exact address of one of your pics though.

Just a Note..
Sometimes its flakey.. On Ineedfreebies.com I used a remote server (dime9, Ineedfreebies is on Vinka) and I told it to block remote linking from all sites except.. I was blocking remote linking of .gif and .jpg ineedfreebies.com www.ineedfreebies.com and the IP and DNS of the Vinka and Dime9 server along with all my other accounts.. From time to time, every single image would be my "Your Stealing My Stuff" Picture.. even though you were browsing from ineedfreebies.com domain.. it was odd, so I shut it down..

Hey Raul,
I never received a reply from your last ticket I responded to about this. Would you update me and let me know if that new file I placed in your account worked for you? Thanks
