AJAX Chat

I have a game on my website, and it uses a chat box.
Currently it's made in AJAX, but it refreshes a particular page once every second, and that's just for one player. It's been using a lot of bandwidth lately, and I'm worried about the future when/if my bandwidth runs out.

Are there any good alternatives for coding a more efficient chat box?

what if you had it refresh every 3 seconds or something like that instead?

That should technically cut your bandwidth usage in 1/3rd. right?

If you are willing to go through a 3rd party, Meebo has chat widgets you can put on your website called meebome widgets. And they integrate with your meebo account which aggregates all of your IM accounts.. oh and its free.

I use one here..

I'm using Meebo RIGHT now! LoL. It's how I continue to misbehave at work.

Well, the chat system on my website is not for chatting with me, but for the game players to chat with each other :P

Polar Dan: Yeah, I guess that should help. The dilemma here is to choose between performance and resources :P

maybe you can have it so it only updates when a message is sent? So, like, if no one is talking, then no need to be refreshing.. make sense?

There is another Meebo alternative.

If you sign up for an account, you also get a 'room' for group chat and you can embed that room on your website.

I just did that here...

Edit - You dont even need to sign up for an account. You can just create a room and embed it.
