FAQ - Bad thumbnail quality with GD
The link is broken.
The link isn't broken. It seems the 4Homepages website is down.

1) I suggest you do NOT use .jpeg and .jpg pictures. the problem with them is that every time you view them the qulity gets down. If you have them just make copies and renames them to .gif pictures...
what do you mean when you say this??? do you mean not use jpg for the pictures themselves or the thumbnails???

regards

but reading FAQ's makes for bad forum discussions!

(that's just my way of saying, I'm lame and I didn't read the faq or check the 4images forum)

I'm just patiently waiting for their site to come back up so i can edit that constants.php file.

..oh, and I'm going to use BBedit to do it

pseudoswede, your thumbs look great. Mine will too (soon) I hope.

I need to find a free smtp server because mine doesn't allow me to use it for things like 4images registration notifications. It tells me 'sorry, SBC customers ONLY! heh..

So, it sure is hot already and it's not even 10am yet.

I mean that jpeg and jpg pictures are a lousy format because every time you view a jpeg/jpg picture its qulity decreases...

example:
you have a digital camera, took some pictures, transferd them to your computer... they are jpeg/jpg pictures... you CLICK one to look at it, and the next time you look at it its WORSE... after about 100 views you just see dots....

get it??? so, if you have a jpeg/jpg picture make a copy and rename to gif.

hehe.. that is NOT true!

Every time you SAVE a jpg you lose a bit of quality -- not much.

You lose nothing by simply VIEWING one.

Oh, and I got tired of waiting for that 4images site to come back up, so I tackled that constants.php file on my own and it's fixed. woo!

oh please tell me you're just being facetious.

If you change the size or resolution of the jpg it will be rerun through the lossy algorithim that produces them.

I've been having a lot of problems with "Permission denied" issues when uploading pictures or auto-thumbnailing.

Here are two threads that will help you out...

http://4homepages.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3383

http://4homepages.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6389 (Actually, point #1 in vividviews' post is incorrect. I usually have to delete the directory 4Images creates for my new category and recreate an identical one using FTP).

Cheers,
Lawrence
