Ok, I've been fooling around with the hotlink protection thing in cPanel, but I can't seem to get it to do what I want it to do, so maybe someone can help me.
All I want is for people to not be able to hotlink to images on my site, for example posting the images directly onto their own forums/web pages so that they load each time someone visits their page. I want instead a small .gif file I made to show up on their page that says to not hotlink (or if that's not possible, I just want the picture to show up as a broken image on their site). And I want all of my subdomains to be protected in this way as well as my main site. In cPanel under "Urls to Allow Access", my site URL is listed along with all of the URLs to my subdomains. Under "Extensions to allow" I have ".gif,.jpg,.jpeg,.png". Under "Url to Redirect to" is the URL to the .gif file that says to not hotlink. And then I checked the box above "Active" and turned hotlinking on. But my images are still loading on other sites. How am I supposed to set it up to do what I want? Thanks ![]() |

It's just a guess, I don't know for sure, but maybe it's cause you have ".gif,.jpg,.jpeg,.png" in the allow list, meaning it won't protect them. Try removing those from the allow list.

I found out that some websites are direct linking my images and icons..so i turned on the hot link but it didnt work, the images are still on their website, here's what I did:
I entered in the Urls to Allow Access box : http://luvlolly.com http://www.luvlolly.com and in the Extensions to allow box : jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp then I checked the activate and clicked on it..its true that it says hotlink is enabled..but its not working! this is my domain: http://luvlolly.com and here's the direct linkers : http://a.xanga.com/hserver/SITE=TEST...T/AAMSZ=468X60 http://chibiusa-moon.blog.pl/ hope that helped sam I know I always bother you with my stupid questions anyways, thanxlolly |

Lolly there are no stupid questions in the forum. It's AOK.
OK, i checked the chibusa site. no wonder you were annoyed, that thing has directly linked a bunch of your graphics. They seem to be sampling from everywhere else. Wanna know something though - your graphics aren't showing. I see red X's for instead of graphics for this.... http://luvlolly.com/icon/maa2.gif I checked the other one - i didn't see any graphics on that page. And wait there's more. I tested it out for me, using a direct link on my site to one of your graphics. http://samhilliard.com/lollytest.php I see red X's there too. So, I think your browser has cached the images. Try clearing your cache. |

it all comes down to .htaccess
if you have just one .htaccess and it's in public_html and you've included that to disable hotlinking directive it affects the whole site. but if you put an .htaccess just in the directory('s) you want to disable hotlinking and it has the right directives in it..well you get the picture ( and everyone else doesn't get it for free ) |
