Exclamation Sftp

Wasn't sure where to post this, but it might have something to do with Control Panel since that's presumably where you'd set it up...

What's the official Surpasshosting.com position on SFTP? I have SSH access to my main account, but ideally I would also have SFTP (secure FTP) access to each of my reseller accounts. As you know, SFTP encrypts the password being sent. I use SSL to encrypt my password when checking emails, so it would be nice to also encrypt the password when logging in via (S)FTP.

Is SFTP an option? If so, how do I set up SFTP to access my accounts?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

sFTP is set up already on most of the servers. If you let us know what your domain is or what server you are on, I can tell you for sure.

You don't really have to know beforehand if the server you are on has it or not. Choosing to use sFTP would be a preference in your FTP program.

Here is one that has the ability:

Thanks for the quick response.

I am on pass2.

I figured out the problem. Apparently my FTP client (which supports sFTP) by default uses port 21 for everything. sFTP uses a different port, apparently, and blanking out the port allowed me to connect (I guess Transmit, my FTP client, knew which port to use automatically). I'm using Transmit, the best OS X FTP client which I highly recommend to Mac OS X users.

According to online help, port 115 is the default sFTP port, not 21 which is used for non-secure FTP. However, putting in port 115 in Transmit, my client, gave me an error, which leads me to believe you're using a different port for sFTP. It might be worthy of a FAQ entry to list exactly which port is used (in fact, I would compile a list of every port for every feature you offer, to save someone like me time in the future).

Thanks again.

Unfortunately I still have a problem:

I can connect via sFTP with my main reseller account but none of my other accounts work. The other accounts are my other domains that I host via my reseller account. I have SSH access to the main reseller account (but not to the other domains presently), if that matters.

On the non-main reseller accounts, I get a pop-up which says "RSA Authentication" in progress verifying it's being encrypted but then it gives me a "SFTP bad packet length (-8003002)" error.

I've tried isolating the incident by using different FTP clients, to no avail. I *can* connect to these domains via HTTP, email and FTP, but just not sFTP.

Please advise.

I need sFTP access on all the domains for security purposes.

Hmmm. I think you need SSH access on all accounts to do this. Please send an email to supportsurpasshosting.com about this situation you're having.
Let us know what you figure out with this, so we can create some type of sFTP tutorial...

The list of available ports * On to do list now.

It does appear that SSH access will be required for this. I've opened a ticket and I will post back in this thread once I find a solution. Thanks again.

Alright, the solution was that I needed SSH access to each domain on my reseller account in order to use sFTP. I'm happy to report that "Eric B.", on your excellent support staff, took care of the issue and I'm happily using sFTP on all my accounts now.

So, recap, in order to use sFTP the client will need to purchase/enable SSH on each domain, not just the main reseller account.

Thanks so much again Surpass! :thumbsup2:
