how do I make it so that the 404 error page that you edit through cpanel also shows up as the 404 error page for subdomains? I saved it as "404.shtml" and it's not showing up as the error page when a subdomain is entered (but it works if I type out the whole URL including all directories instead of using the subdomain)

Try puttin ghte 404.shtml in the directory of the subdomain.
