Shared SSL

I see a new icon on our CPanel concerning SSL. Is the SSL certificate that Surpass Hosting provides a dedicated certificate or shared? I would prefer a lower cost shared certificate if that's possible.

Is the current charge a one time charge, a monthly charge, or an annual charge?

They provide a shared certificate and offer (non-shared) ones as well for a one time per year fee. That the cert. is good for one whole year. You tell them where you want it and they will also install it for you.

You say they 'provide' a shared certificate? You make it sound like it's part of the package. Is it available through the reseller I use? I'm assuming the $115 per year charge is for a dedicated certificate?

You can access the shared SSL on your server by using this address

https://ipaddressofserver/~yourusername/

Hi,

For some reason it is not possible to access my domain name with HTTPS as indicated in this thread...

https://66.195.242.153/~net2ftp/index.php

I am on Vocal. Its probably a new server -- it is not yet on the server list, only on the status page...

Thx,

David

When using /`yourusername/, is that the cpanel user name or something to do with the site name?

Like david78, mine didn't work either. My ipaddress is x.x.175.250. I don't even see that address tied to a server. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

I think there might be a glitch in the dns over at surpass right now. I am a reseller and I cannot access accounts by IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/~username/) at this time...

I've reported a ticket.

Using the IP takes DNS out of the game. The /~username address is only usable if set through the httpd.conf or using WHM it's known as "mod_userdir" . In other words, it can be disabled.

The IP address resolves just fine and if you drop the https for http://yourip/~net2ftp, you'll see your site. I think your on the mark when you say it's a new server, as it's very likely that the SSL certificate isn't set up.

Just a little info on SSL: With some exceptions, an SSL certificate is tied to a domain name, so if a specific domain name is not reqested a warning will be delivered in the form of a pop up stating that the name or something else does not correspond to the certificates information. The bottom line is that "Shared SSL" will almost always trigger a warning if you request anything but the domain name on the certificate. Another fact, is that SSL enabled sites are IP based, and as such, can only have one web root directory (public_html). This being the case, "Shared SSL" relies on the web servers "mod_userdir" setting. If "mod_userdir" is disabled, "Shared SSL" is disabled as well, so https://yourip/~username will result in an error. Additionally, http://yourip/~username will fail to work.
