Question Custom DNS

Hi all,

I have a problem and would like some help if you could?

I have recently purchased a dedicated server and everything has been setup fine all my accounts have been transfered from my old reseller account.

As you can see the domain name www.yingyang-webhosting.co.uk works fine but when i try and set the custom DNS on this domain e.g. ns1.yingyang-webhosting.co.uk, ns2.yingyang-webhosting.co.uk i get the following error:

Subdomains of the original domainname as name servers for the original domainname need a fixed IP! Please refer to the FAQ (keyword: Glue domain)!

That refers to the following article taken from 1and1's FAQ

------- Start -------
What is a Glue Domain?

How to set glue records (required for name server registrations)

If your Name Server is in the same zone as your domain it is called a Glue
Domain. A glue record is an A Record that specifies the address of the
server.

For e.g if the NameServer(DNS) for domain-of-your-choice.com was
ns.domain-of-your-choice.com then the NS record would look like this, but
you will also need to have the following A record.

domain-of-your-choice.com NS ns.domain-of-your-choice.com

ns.domain-of-your-choice.com A 217.160.226.82

To do this, please create a subdomain "ns.domain-of-your-choice.com" and
assign an IP Address to it. Once the IP Address has propogated you can
assign "ns.domain-of-your-choice.com" as the DNS for your domain
"domain-of-your-choice.com

------- End --------

Could anyone advise on what to do? I can't ping the name servers ns1.yingyang-webhosting.co.uk but the domain name works fine as i have pointed it to the IP address.

Thanks in advance

Dave

What this means is you have to either have support create those (they'll use up 2 of your static IP addresses) or you have to do it yourself using 2 of your static addresses - one for each 'name server'.

Nameservers and DNS - again (sorry)

Hi people...

Sorry I have to contribute to the huge amount of info that is already here, because i really can't seem to find definite answers.

======================================

I, like many others, want to have ns1.mydomain.com instead of ns514.dizinc.com... but can i know when this is implemented, whether these are also true or can be done:

mydomain.com ---> my main website
www.mydomain.com ---> my main website
whois mydomain.com ---> nameserver1: ns1.mydomain.com
whois myclientdomain.com ---> nameserver1: ns1.mydomain.com

what do i need to do?

======================================

while trying to fix things myself, i added a DNS zone:
domain: ns1.testdomain.com
ip: www.xxx.yyy.zzz
user: (none)

and it says it is added to my main reseller account. the thing is i realise i cannot delete or edit it! what should i do? will it affect the functionality of my account?

======================================

Where i can find reliable and complete information on Child Nameservers, DNS resource records functions and the querying procedure?

Hi jake.

1: email support. Tell them to activate your custom name servers. Tell them what you want them to be.

2:go to your registrar and do the same. Register "your own nameservers" to be what you told support.

3:change the name servers associated with your domains (also at your registrar) to be what you just set up.

John
