Change of Primary Domain & Joomla

I have a Joomla website setup on surpass shared hosting. I would like the change the primary domain, how do I go about this, and will it affect my Joomla installation/databases etc?

You didn't mention whether this is for shared, reseller, or dedicated, but following should hold true for the most part in either case.

To change your primary domain, all you need to do is put in a request to the helpdesk. I believe there may be a small fee if you've had the account for over 30 days ($10?). You might want to check on that if that's a concern.

As for Joomla!, I haven't gotten around to using it yet, but I suspect it will be an issue (especially if this is shared hosting, or the reseller account in reseller hosting). There are probably references to the installation path (/home/domainname) all over the place. If the domain changes, so does the path, which will most likely break your Joomla! install. I would say your best bet would be to search their forum. Surely someone has posted that question, and there is probably a list of files that you'll need to modify with the new information. Possibly a bit of a pain, but not a showstopper.

Failure is not an option. It comes standard with all Microsoft products.

There is a $10 charge if your account is over 30 days (I've just gone through this). Open a ticket and request a domain-name change. After you paid them and got a confirmation number, forward that to sales and all will be set. Make sure you make backups of all your files and databases.

*John, he DID mention that it was for a shared hosting *

will my joomla set up be affected?

Thanks for your replies, and yes John I did mention it was shared.

So Edwin I will back up everything, but would you happen to know if I will need to reinstall Joomla for it to work correctly after the transfer or should I be able to edit the path?

Thanks

Technically, I don't think the physical path of the files' location has to change. They should be able to "park" the new domain to the same physical folder. (though this can get confusing from a file maintenance perspective).

Your database information should not be effected by this move since the database host is still "localhost" and your database name and username/password should stay unchanged.

If the physical file path does change, I would think there is some config file Joomla uses for storing the URL it is at and the filepath to use (I have never used Joomla). But, I know the SMF Forum software has a settings file it uses to store all the database, url, and base filepath information. I did move my forum and once I changed this information, was able to log into the forum and then I went into the admin section to change the paths for the avatars, attachments, smilies, etc..

Maybe one of our Joomla folks will chime in; otherwise, Joomla's website/support forums should have some documentation about this kind of procedure.

Thanks, I will have a look at some more Joomla support and see if I can find out there.

Sorry, I forgot to look in this thread during all the time (blames pending burn-out), but I think your question has been answered now.

All paths should stay the same. Sorry, I don't know anything Joomla related though.
