I'm trying to setup Google Apps on my domain so I can use Gmail as my webmail and then have Thunderbird setup with IMAP. Currently, I have Thunderbird setup as POP3 and have to use SquirrelMail or whatever if I need webmail away from my laptop and I'd rather have the Gmail interface.
Now I am a total noob at this stuff so perhaps I'm missing something obvious. I use Surpass Hosting and my domain is registered through Surpass. When I login to surpassdomains, I go to Manage and then Edit DNS Records. However, it tells me I can't change the MX stuff unless I use default nameservers. If I use default nameservers, my website and sub-domains go bye-bye. We tried changing the nameservers to default and it did let us enter the MX info from Google, but then none of my pages worked so I put the DNS that came in the e-mail when I signed up for hosting back in and my sites came back. Any ideas? |

Have you tried the MX Entry feature in Cpanel yet? Looks like it could help you out in what you are trying to do. =)

This tutorial should help:
http://www.surmunity.com/search-me/2...x-records.html It's mainly for dedicated server owners though, we need to get one created for shared and reseller. Will have it up soon. ![]()

Speaking of Google Apps, I have a dedicated server, and I am seriously considering switching my email to Google Applications. I really like the Gmail application, plus it's always a good thing to diversify where my data is being stored, accessed, etc. I have a few questions that maybe one of you experts can answer (I am a total newbie when it comes to how DNS works, although I've been learning).
I've changed the MX entry in WHM for the domain that I am testing, and email seems to go to and from google without a hitch, so that's good. But what I'm wondering is if my server goes down, will email continue getting routed to Google's servers? I can't seem to figure out if the DNS Record that has the MX Entry is somehow propagated or if the MX Entry is provided by my server each time. If it's the latter, then is there any way to have set it up so email gets routed to google even if the server is down? Thanks a bunch!!! (and please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject ;-) )

I asked support and they said no, since it needs to go through the server first and if your server is down, so is DNS.

If the server that is sending mail to you can't resolve the domain, it will keep the message in the queue for several days while attempting to locate the IP address and MX record for your domain. This should address any concerns you have about the dedicated server going down and your emails getting lost.
